Maun's Power Station is a
testimony to what is possible with
determination and imagination.
Fashioned out of scrap steel, a
derelict, incompleted coal-fired
electricity generation plant has
been transformed into a centre of
entertainment and creative
excellence.
Containing (at the time of writing
- the development is continuous)
an excellent restaurant, popular
bar, cinema, music and
performing-arts venue, the offices
of Okavango Tours & Safaris, a
beauty and hair salon, and the
innovative community arts project
The Craft Centre, The Power
Station has become a 'must' for
visitors to Maun, gateway to the
Okavango Delta.
Just a short walk from Maun
International Airport, you can pop
in while awaiting your flight
out to the Delta or home, if only for
Maun's only decent cup of coffee.

History of The Power Station
The Power Station also serves as a popular restaurant and bar for the towns people as well as for the hungry
tourist. The restaurant serves excellent value for money meals and snacks and has a wide menu from local pap
and meat, to Eastern style food and vegetarian specialties. On Wednesday evening fish and chips served in
copies of the local newspaper are a specialty for the weekly British night. Combined with the showing of a British
comedy picture at the centre's cinema, the night is a homage to all that is best in British culture. Union Jack
shorts are optional. The bar has also proved to be a popular local watering hole for devotees of the amber stuff,
and has a large range of beers and spirits, as well as the cold sober softer stuff.
Music is another aspect of the centre which has proved a popular venue for local and international artists, and if
you are lucky enough to be around in August, you might catch the colourful 'Rio' style Maun Carnival, the only
one of its kind in Botswana, which is hosted by The Power Station. On other occasions you might connect with a
performance by the amazing Stiga Solo, Maun's guitar legend from the delta. His "swamp music" mixes
traditional tswana folk songs with modern lyrics and the rhythms of African rock. Whilst Stiga and his band
put the funk into their funky rock, traditional dancers sway to the beat that will get your pulse
racing and onto the dance floor. Apart from its value as an entertainment centre, the Power Station also
houses the headquarters of the international tour operation, Okavango Tours and Safaris. And if you've got time
before dashing off to one of their holiday destinations, you can even hire a bike from them to explore the sights of
Maun. But perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the Power Station is the building itself, whose architectural
wonder is a legacy of its colourful history. Originally the building was to be a power generating plant to supply
electricity to the then sleepy delta village of Maun. The man behind the scheme had brought a defunct 1930s
power station in Namibia and sold its contents to the Botswana Development Corporation and Botswana Power.
